Are we programmed to say things that don't make sense because we've heard them so many times before? There was a woman on television who was asked about a book she self published that was just picked up by a major publisher. She was asked if she ever dreamed of having this much attention from her book. She said never in a million years did she think the book would bring her the attention she has now, or words to that effect.

I call the woman a liar!

There is NO way in the word she wanted to have the book only seen by her family and friends only. If that was the case she would have written the story on a piece of paper and handed it to them. She wouldn't be on a national news show talking about the book. In fact, she wouldn't have gone to the local station to talk about the book when asked. To go further down the hole, she wouldn't have put the book up for sale on her website she designed for the book.

It's an insult to thinking people when you have folks try to feign modesty when they are seeking fame. I'll be honest and say yes, I want Chaotic Fringe to be read by millions of people, to go on shows and talk about issues of the day because of comments I've made on the web. I wouldn't do the work I do if I didn’t expect some payoff in the future. I would be kidding myself if I said I was only doing this 'for a few people.'

We have this notion that it is noble to be humble about fame. Well, we don't like the fame whores because when you exist because of fame your self worth is incredibly skewed, but it doesn’t make sense to pretend putting out a book or setting up a program is being done just because. Watch any reality show where they give something to 'deserving' people and even if they try to say they are doing what they do out of the kindness of their heart, if you look deeper into what they say you will find a more selfish reason.

Now, don't get me wrong and think I'm saying it is bad to be selfish in some regards. As an example, if the woman who was shown on TV today admitted the reason she did the book was because she was trying to sort through some of the issues she was having with her own child, it may have helped in understanding her motivation and would have given more sympathy in my eyes. However, to claim she had no idea what she did would reach and touch so many people when she invested in a website, put the book in local bookstores and is now going across the country talking about the book just exposes the false sense of selflessness she is trying to project.

All I ask is that we don't take what some people say for granted when they try to promote some helpful technique, study or information. While they may want to believe they are doing this because of selfless reasons there will probably be a selfish reason under the surface.
