I never watched the show other than passing the channel surfing to another one. I don't know why or how she divorced her husband. I wouldn't have known about her meltdown over a pizza or the cancellation of her show if it wasn't for NBC and the Today Show having some unholy pact with the Discover Channel (which owns the network that airs her show) which mandated they have her on making unflattering comments every week.

Apparently today is the last day of her show, which she said on national television was 'an end of an era.” Really? End of an era.

This is the very bad side of reality TV, the people who promote it and the 'stars' who believe in it. The secret everyone knows but doesn't want to admit is that reality 'stars' have shows because their lives are a mess, not because their lives are interesting. They aren't on to show uplifting stories; they are on for the rest of us to say, man I'm glad my life isn't that messed up. Even on so called uplifting reality shows like Extreme Home Makeover, have you ever seen a family that is simply just poor, living day to day, getting a house they need? There has to be 'a story' behind the need and the drive for people to help out. Just being poor doesn't cut it. However, to give credit to the show, you seldom hear about the people trying to parlay the experience to ink another show, or to constantly appear on talk shows or other reality shows talking about their lives.

Gosselin got caught up in the 'fame' of reality shows and she thought that fame would last a lifetime. When I first heard about her husband telling her she should get a real job and not think of the reality show as real, he seemed like a divorced husband lashing out at his wife. When I heard her response to him on The Today Show, I felt so sorry for him. How could he have lived so long with this woman who was obviously has now grown in love with the fame of the show.

In the interview on The Today Show she was sure to plug the website that would feature her kids and their lives because it would be something the fans want. It was disconcerting to hear she believes this is now the only life she can live. 'Regular life' is beneath her. Now, I will say having that many kids and only having one income she will probably have to stay in the television zone to provide for so many, but one would assume she would have saved some money to go on for a bit.

While it would be the fitting thing to say I feel sad for the children, I feel sad for the casualties that will come later because of the reality show phenomenon. People seek instant fame, no matter what they must do or whom it might harm. She got a show with 8 kids and soon after there were other shows with families with multiple kids. Most of the viewing public thought it was all fun and Brady Bunch happiness until Octomom came around and people realized there was a real possibility someone would do something silly for fame. MTV got a hit with pregnant teenage moms and while it is said the pregnancy rate hasn't gone up, the girls on those shows are considered 'stars' because of the kids. They get on the covers of magazines. You don't think there are girls thinking this is a way of getting self esteem? On one of the Housewives shows the husband killed himself because of a divorce he was going through. No matter, the show must go on and we'll milk it for all we can.

So Kate Gosselin is out of a job with 8 kids. She unfortunately will be with us a long time, and so will her kids.
