This morning, for some delusional reason, I decided to watch the national morning news shows. With the budget deficit, proposals for guns, Presidential appointments and other important issues, I was looking forward to hearing some discussion on those things effecting everyone in the country. I’m sure you can guess what happened. To be fair, this was after 7:30 and before 8am locally, so maybe those hard hitting subjects were discussed before I turned on the TV. However, the low level of information surprised me. The three big stories on the three broadcasts networks were 1) an Alabama beauty queen who is dating a college football player who was the focus of a national broadcast, 2) Duchess Middleton’s 30th birthday celebration and 3) Josh Brolin talking about his arrest on New Year’s Eve. You know, I like trashy, gossip style news in small doses. I don’t have anything against this type of news but you would figure from news shows there would be, oh, I don’t know, actual news. The three broadcast networks have two hours in the morning to inform the public of news relevant to them. In the case of The Today Show on NBC, some markets have four hours of news from them. If you are lucky, the first 15 minutes of any of the three networks will give you what I would call important news. Other than short updates at the top of the hour, the rest of the broadcast time is devoted to stories which effects absolutely no one but the subjects they report on.

In a few cases there may be a story about a product recall that will effect families, but recipes, entertainment interviews and ‘concerts on the plaza’ do not inform me or help me make decisions on current events. It is no wonder that more people are getting information on current events from places like The Daily Show, because while comedic they are attempting to inform through satire. The morning shows have become the laughing stock of the industry.
