I saw the tweet yesterday and I was sure I read wrong. It was from John Fugelsang and I assumed it was a joke, since he is a comedian. I had just woken up and sometimes I can be disoriented, which I was sure was happening. I checked out the link I saw on the tweet and it took me to the Washington Post Business section. Whatever grogginess I had was washed away because I knew by the banner this was not a hoax and not a dream.

Disney bought Lucasfilms.

That wasn't all. It seems Disney is all ready to start a new round of films, with a Star War 7 (not the official title) ready for a 2015 release and it will be the start of a new trilogy.

I've got mixed emotions about this announcement, but I think my mixed feelings are because I'm a first generation Star Wars fan. We lived off of stories of Lucas being an independent filmmaker. What got people like myself motivated to do films was thinking and knowing we had a way of controlling our production; of making the film we wanted without a committee or a Hollywood system. We never imagined Star Wars being made without Lucas. You can say all you want about the last trilogy, and yes I have my criticisms also, but it was Star Wars and it was from George Lucas. That is how it was supposed to be.

A part of me thinks we, and by we I mean the critical know it alls who sit by a computer and act like we are all knowledgeable, caused Lucas to sell Lucasfilms. Look at some of the documentaries that have been put out critical of the last trilogy. Look at the millions of articles, tweets and YouTube videos who mock Lucas. C'mon, Lucas Raped My Childhood is a battlecry to many self serving, self appointed keepers of the flame. Us old heads didn't like the poop jokes, the wooden acting, the kid friendly stuff and we went crazy with every release of the new trilogy.

Now the control of Star Wars, controlled by one person, has been sold to Disney. Disney? I know a lot of people think of Disney as a happy place, but a few of us think of Disney as a corporate juggernaut that swallows creative endeavors, water them down and exploit them to a naïve audience. We see Disney as the Evil Empire. The thing I, I think more fans would have been upset with this decision in the early 90s. That was before the re-release and the 'improvements' and before the trilogy. It would have been the time when Lucas was still on a pedestal for a lot of fans. I don't think fan care so much anymore because Lucas isn't the same person in their eyes.

Many of the comments I have seen are glad he had sold the company. They feel, somehow, that the series will be put back on track, that the former glory of Star War will be in good hands with Disney. Don't be so sure of that, people. Just in the fact Disney announced that a sequel will be out in three year means they've got big plans on recouping their 4 billion dollar investment. We could be heading for a flood of cheap filling projects for a decade or more. While you might point to the success Disney has with movies made by Marvel, you still have Marvel executives at the helm. One would assume they have the best interest of their brand at hand. Remember, a few months ago Lucas named Kathleen Kennedy head of Lucasfilms. She will be the one guiding the franchise. At best, and this was made clear in the announcement, Lucas would be a creative consultant. He will not be part of day to day operation and he may just be nothing more than someone who gives them ideas they could use or not use.

In the end none of this matters. As much as I'm uneasy with this news I'm not going to lie. I will be in line to see the news film in the theater. I will be sitting down watching the new TV shows (yes, there was talk of the often rumored TV show going forward). I will hate the situation but I will still support the franchise. It's Star Wars and it's what I've grown up with.
