When we were last on the GOP crazy talk train, Todd Akin talked about legitimate rape, which got the GOP leaders to go crazy. We heard a lot of people condemn Akin's comments even though a few , like VP nominee Paul Ryan, had the same position Akin has. It has only been a week since the comment was made, thought with all the twitter conversation you would think it has been much longer.

Well, get ready for the newest crazy talk, and this one will blow your mind.

Tom Smith is a Republican Senate candidate in Pennsylvania. He has all the credentials a Republican has to have. A good size family, a loving wife and strong social values. He was at the Pennsylvania Press Club a few hour ago and he made a curious statement which lead to an incredibly stupid one. In response to a question about Todd Akin, he said he condemned the comments Akin said but agreed that abortion should be banned in all cases. The reporter asked the inevitable question about what he would do if his daughter or granddaughter became pregnant in the case of rape. He said he had lived with something like that in his family.

OK, so let's pause for just a moment. The reporter asked the hypothetical question of would he consider abortion as an alternative if a female in his family was raped. There were no qualifiers in the question, like if it was legitimate, forced or anything like that. Smith answered they went through something like that in the family. By saying 'in the family' you could figure maybe it was a relative that might have been raped. In clarifying the statement, he made the comment that got a lot of people scratching their heads.

"She chose life, and I commend her for that. She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didn't have to ... she chose the way I thought. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't rape."

Alright, so a family member had a similar situation with rape and, considering he said “she chose life” we can assume she had the child. So what situation wouldn't be exactly rape but similar to rape? Here is his answer:

"Having a baby out of wedlock . . . Put yourself in a father's position. Yes, it is similar."

No wonder the Republicans have so many problems with women. Tom Smith equates having a child out of wedlock as the same thing as rape? OK, in his words similar to rape? How in the bloody world is a baby out of wedlock like a rape? The GOP has quite a few candidates that have Neanderthal views on social issues. Tom Smith's answer goes way beyond Todd Akin's comment where he demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the female anatomy. In Smith's world, if you have a kid and aren't married you were raped. It's scary to think this guy believes what Akin said about biology and 'legitimate rape' was wrong but out-of-wedlock rape is not crazy talk.

I almost wish these guys would shut up because they are so backwards in their thinking but if they keep their mouths shut the voting public won't have any idea how incredibly ignorant some candidates are.
