Pat Buchanan, after months of being suspended from MSNBC, was officially fired today. I guess the actually statement was they parted ways but in the real world we call what happened to Buchanan as being fired. No doubt a factor in the decision was a new book he wrote called Suicide of a Superpower. The book, from what I have read, is typical Buchanan with outdated thinking about the lack of power with the white race and how America is losing the traditions of the founding fathers because of illegal immigration, liberals and civil rights.

What should fascinate me but doesn't in a case like Buchanan, is when he get fired he was quick to claim his freedom of speech has been violated. I remember years ago when Laura Schlesinger, former radio talk show firebrand, was forced to quit her show because of use of the n-word, and the first thing she claimed was her First Amendment rights were violated. Of course, no rights were violated. What Buchanan and others seem to forget, and this is true of those of the left and right of the political spectrum, is that you have the right to say what you want to say, but so do people who disagree with you. Just like you have an agenda, so do people who oppose you. With that, people can, if they disagree with you, have the ability to petition, to request and to boycott for change.

The First Amendment doesn't guarantee that if you a controversial point of view you have the right to keep your job. Again, controversial can be for both sides of the political and social divide. Of course, you shouldn't be harassed, you shouldn't be attacked, you shouldn't have bodily harm done to you, because what you are doing in your speech is making a statement or being an advocate for a cause. Buchanan is free to write his book, to make the statements he makes and MSNBC is in their rights to fire him for those statements. Despite the gloom and doom rhetoric Buchanan and his type like to spin on their departure, their First Amendment rights haven't been violated by the firing. They haven't been blacklisted. They are still free to speak to anyone who will listen to them. Pat can still write books, he still can set up a website to air his comments, he can put up a camera and post videos up on YouTube. Knowing the nature of cable television, Pat Buchanan will probably find a home on another Foxy network soon.
