Ah, Dr. Laura, I thought you were gone from the airwaves but you came back in style. I don’t get something, why is it some people feel the need to pick at the scab? If you’re going to go into a minefield, you better be fully prepared, not just think you’re prepared but double and triple prepared. Dr. Laura said the word nigger on her show not once but quite a few times and like a lot of ivory tower wannabes she was trying to be too cute for her own good. She figured by using the word in the context of someone else saying the word, translation she was only repeating the word because other people said it, she could make the larger point of why are we so bothered about racism.

She and many like her don’t get it. America has a multitude of sins with racism yet there are a large number of people who feel racism doesn’t affect them. They will say they never had slaves, never discriminated against anyone so why should they continue to pay for the sins of their forefathers? It’s kind of a valid point however these same people will destroy all their pious statements by proving they also have some deep seeded racism in themselves. They won’t admit it, but it’s there. What they want to do is have some magic wand waved to eliminate all of us complaining about racism yet they won’t do anything on their end to clean up the mess in their backyard.

The Dr. Laura incident is a perfect example of this. She just couldn’t understand why black comics on HBO could say the word nigger yet white people can’t. Well, there are white comics who use the word redneck and if I went up to Dr. Laura and called her a redneck, would that make it OK? In the 80s there were a number of Hispanic comedians that used the word wetbacks. Would it be OK for me to go up to a Hispanic and call them a wetback?

See, with Dr. Laura and people like her, they equate the word nigger and wetback with redneck. Calling someone a redneck might cause some psychological pain, but calling someone a redneck is like slapping someone on the back with your hand while calling someone a nigger or wetback is like taking a 2 by 4 and swinging it at their gut. The impact is a lot greater.

When you confront Dr. Laura and people like her with this information, they tend to come up with the one person clause. This clause essentially is if one person in the race can absolve them or excuse them it’s a blanket pass to say and do the thing that is offensive. Dr. Laura said because black comics use the word nigger it must be OK for everyone to use it. Well I know it doesn’t sit well with people like her but no, you can’t use the word. Why? Because most black people don’t like using the word! You may not like the word redneck but there are white people who refer to themselves as rednecks. That doesn’t mean I should go around and greet every white person I know by calling them a redneck. By the same token, just because some comics, or the black guy down the hall, or the ‘brothas’ you see on the basketball court use the word nigger doesn’t mean you should start saying the word nigger.

Now, Dr. Laura said in her ‘apology’ that in the use of the word nigger it might have gone over the heads of the dumb people in the audience what brilliance she was trying to impart on the unwashed masses. OK I was being a bit sarcastic so let me show you the actual quote she said:

“ . . . I ended up, I’m sure, with many of you losing the point I was trying to make, because you were shocked by the fact that I said the word.”

This, I gather, is the statement she was trying to make on her show, which was made in the middle of her nigger tirade.

"My dear, the point I am trying to make...we've got a black man as president and we've got more complaining about racism than ever. I think that's hilarious."

See, because we have a black man in the White House racism should magically go away. She did mention in the radio talk that it was white people who put Obama in the White House and with that statement, much like the Rush Limbaugh statement a few weeks ago where eh states Michelle Obama is allowed to experience what it’s like to be rich, you get to where I see the problem of calling racism over because of something ‘they’ did. Obama was elected President so since he couldn’t get elected without white people it must prove that all white people are over slavery and racism and so should you. Oh, by the way, disregard the posters with Obama with a bone through his nose, the birthers who insist he isn’t American and the radio hosts who call him a socialist. Also, even though it doesn’t directly affect you but hey, we did elect a black President, we aren’t racist even though we want to put all those anchor baby popping, job stealing, don’t speak English Mexicans back across the border because they are criminals.

Dr. Laura, you may have thought you were trying to make a point, but you weren’t and you were so wrong it wasn’t funny. Even your apology was regrettably pathetic.
