I think my acceptance of Twitter as a linking force in the world ended today. I was getting up, trying to motivate myself to do some work and I got a message off the side of my machine where a person I followed asked what people were doing for July 4th. For the past few hours I had seen people wishing folks a great 4th of July but also telling / bragging about what they were doing.

Not that I expect to have heartfelt messages every time there is a tweet but I have seen a lot of junk being given out that is irrelevant to me. Yes, I know, I can hear people say that Twitter is just too much of a social gadfly to really give a lot of news but I’m looking at Twitter the way I see cellphones. I like them as a convenience, I like them for emergencies, and I can even see them for SOME casual talk. What I can’t understand is how people treat cellphones like they are lifelines to the world that must be used every second of the day. When I am in a public place, I don’t need to hear your conversation. I have heard the most embarrassing stories told by people on public transportation, things they probably wouldn’t tell strangers but being on a cellphone they think they are at home and I guess that no one will hear. In a sense I guess that’s true since other people are engaged in their own private conversation.

The issue is those of us not on a call have to hear details of their life we don’t want to know.

That is what Twitter has become to me.

Yes, I share some private stuff on Twitter, but I don’t give out everything I do every minute of every day. A few months ago I purged a lot of people I followed on Twitter because I got tired of getting my messages full of cross talk from conversations. I got tired of ads disguised as conversations. Now that I have had more time to evaluate the system, it’s time to prune again.
