The tea party movement and the Republicans have insulted President Obama in a lot of ways. There have been Nazi, socialist and communist references at rallies. Some posters have had watermelons in front of the White House, or Obama with ‘witch doctor’ clothes on him.

Just the other day I ran across this quote buried in an article:
"I know I'm being a little nit-picky, but how exactly does President Sanford and Son think he got elected--by CB radio?"

When I came across the quote I felt bad. It was another insult to Obama yet this insult was allowed to pass. It wasn’t attributed to some rabid sign waver at a tea party rally. It wasn’t spouted out by the blowhards Limbaugh, Beck or Hannity. It wasn’t some crawl spot displayed on Fox News and it wasn’t some folksy slogan whipped up by Sarah Palin.

No the quote was made by Bill Maher, whom I would think a lot of people would consider a liberal. Now I’m not sure if Fox News made a comment on it but CNN and MSNBC didn’t from what I can tell, because if they had there would have been posts on their website. Where I saw the article, on Huffington Post, it was in reference to a speech Obama made telling students they should put away the iPods, Xboxs and other devices because they are distractions. For the head of the article, it was said Maher criticized the President’s ‘fuddy-duddy act.’ The Sanford and Son comment hits you from left field but there is no comment on it.

Where I’m concerned is the double standard Maher has been given. This is a spot that hurts me because I’m going to sound just like a Republican talking point, because if a Republican had said the same things about Obama there would have been national discussion on the issue. A liberal says something that probably could be considered offensive and there is silence. Understand I’m not saying the comment was completely racist or insulting. I’m looking at this in context because Rush Limbaugh says stupid things every hour on his radio show, yet there are commentators who will constantly monitor and talk about every little thing he says, comparing his comments to hate speech. When Bill Maher makes comments about ‘the enemy’ those same outlets turn a blind eye to him. The other side sure makes mention of it but you won’t see it become a ‘national obsession.’ It would seem if the comment was something that would have been commented on if it was Limbaugh or Beck it should be equally talked about if made by someone on the same side.
