I’ve watched a lot of to the right smarty-pants on TV the past week who have asked for President Obama to ‘do something’ about the Iran election and the crackdown going on in the streets. They have been all over the map, with some, and I was surprised to see this mentioned and I saw it come out of the mouth of an elected official, that because Obama didn’t speak earlier it embolden the Iranian government and the President had to bear some responsibility for the deaths because he didn’t speak out sooner. Like I said this wasn’t a transcript I read online. I saw the elected official make the statement, saw he was given ample efforts by the moderator to, let’s be frank, pull his ass out of the fire and saw the official continue to state this. It was truly shocking to hear.

There have been other officials and pundits who wanted the President to say something earlier, yet when there was a report on this by MSNBC, they pulled tapes from when the initial election results came out and the first protests hit the streets where the President did condemn the violence done by the Iranian government. In fact, they had clips that were word for word the same statements he just made, yet the opposition is so against the President they ignored this fact.

This isn’t the first time the misstatement has occurred. After the Cairo speech, it was widely mentioned by the press and pundits on the right that the President never mentioned the word terrorist or terrorism. Again, it took some simple digging by MSNBC to show he made reference to terrorist or terrorism four times.

Those of us in the real world have to understand politicians and political pundits play this stupid game of trying to get over on the other side. They will shave and nuance the truth to their advantage to make the other side look bad. This is all under the pretense of the other side having done this to them before.

I’m sure many right wing pundits can’t forget the drumming their President took for eight years. I know they can’t because when cornered they mention this fact all the time as a justification for holding ‘their feet to the fire.’ It’s like the old Hatfield and McCoy feud that went on for over 100 years. It has been so long no one in the feud in the modern time had no idea how the feud started. They were doing it more because of tradition than of actual harm done to them by the other side. The Republicans attack Democrats because of Bush and the Democrats will fight the Republicans because of Clinton, but the fight the had with those two Presidents can get kicked back to Reagan and Carter, because when you look back at the attacks Bush and Clinton got, at those times they went back to the well with Reagan and Carter.

I know it’s too much to ask for both sides to break off. They have long memories and hold grudges for a long time. It’s up to us to call them on partisan bickering. We have to tell our elected officials we aren’t stupid; we know the game their playing and they need to stop. Only then can we get some of the shenanigans ended and we can work to get progress done.
