It makes sense that the story is a hot item on the internet, but it's another example of outrage from people just learning about it but not researching the story and putting the issue in full context.

It seems a name from scandal past, Mary Kay Lettourneau, is back in the news. It seems her and her husband, who at the time she became part of cable TV infamy was her second grade student, then 12 years old, are hosting a 'Hot for Teacher' night at a local bar. Yeah, on the surface this seems like the dumbest thing to do. She gets caught with her 12 year old student, the guy father’s two children by her, and they want to send a sick message with this Hot for Teacher night at a bar. See, that is the knee jerk reaction a commentator on the cable shows would make. They would bring up harm to the kids and all the other slot mark phrases you can think of.

Here's the thing, time has marched on for the couple. I didn't realize they have been married for 4 years. When the whole affair started she was 34 and he was 12. She's now 47 and he's 26. She served her whole 7 year sentence. Where I can see some may still have a problem with this bar thing, even with thirteen years past the event, according to the bar owner that is sponsoring the event this is the third time they have sponsored the event.

I'm like a lot of people in that when I first heard about the story, I thought the initial event happened five years or so ago. The thirteen year time span never crossed my mind. The last I remembered he just turned 18, so knowing he's 26 was a little jolting. At this point, we're talking about people who have well paid for their issues. She is done with jail, he's well past the age of consent, and there is enough morbid curiosity in them that throwing a Hot for Teacher event at a nightclub or bar may be in bad taste but not illegal.

I can see where there would be many bars, in anonymity, which would have these types of events. It's because of the notoriety of the couple that has caused the commotion, but again where was the discussion on their last event? This is the third one, and while I can see the first one going under the radar, I can't imagine that doing a second one would be missed. I can't get worked up over something that was so long ago and has happened a number of times. I think, if anything, this was a way for the news to put something up stir passions again. I'm sure some web page or network, when talking about the story, will bring up tales of teachers from the past who seduced students. That means we'll be subjected to bikini clad ones from the past.
