I'm quite surprised at how the new Presidency is going. We're chugging along to 100 days and all things considered we haven't had any huge issues going on. Yes, we have the wars, the economy and all the other ills we had from before, but nothing like the gloom and doom predicted by some pundits.

I guess the thing that really has been surprising is how normal things have been. What I mean is, I expected a lot of black this or black that reactions, just a lot of talk about race and how Obama is the first in things. There hasn't been a lot of this in the press or the pundits. Well, I can't say that for sure since it can be assumed there are some on the fringe that probably will bring race up at the drop of a hat.

When Obama went to Europe, there was talk about it being his first official visit, but nothing about Michelle Obama being the first black First Lady or how she would act with the Queen or other silly stuff. In fact, from all accounts the Queen and her got along great, even causing something of an incident when it was thought Michelle Obama broke protocol by touching the Queen but video later showed Obama responded to the Queen touching her.

The big fashion showdown, which was so silly it didn't make much sense to my male sensibilities, was the meeting between Bruni and Obama. Fashionistas had a field day for this battle, but who cares. What I liked, what I'm proud about is race didn't come up. It was about personality, it was about style and I'm talking both about the President and the First Lady. There wasn't a lot of the 'he's the first black President' stuff going on, which was refreshing.

I'm sure once we get closer to the 100 days and the reflection comes, there's going to be a few pundits who will bring up how un racial this time has been. I know in some comments I've seen black pundits almost ready to burst with being so proud. I know my parents have been holding their heads a little higher. It's not so much that racial injustice is gone, but it feels good to have an example that can be pointed to that isn't an athlete or entertainer. The better thing about the First Family is they aren't what I'm sure many Americans expected. All of a sudden, the images of watermelons on the White House lawn seems so 1920s. They aren't thought of as black but as Americans, which is as it should be.
