FoxNews and in a small respect CNN, has been talking about the drug wars and shootouts in Mexico, especially across the border. The State Department even put out a statement telling Americans to be cautious in Mexico. The Mexican government says that isn’t true and tells us Americans to come and have fun.

Well I was in Mexico, Tijuana to exact, for a day and a half. I did see a lot of police activity, saw lots of police with heavy weapons, but I didn’t see a lot of violence. There was nothing too different from any other time I’ve been there.

Just now there was something on FoxNews about the Mexican violence and they made it sound like the police were outnumbered and there were gang fights in the streets. I’m sure it occurs, just like in any city in the United States or any other country. You will have areas that have problems; you will have areas that are safe. As long as you keep your head on straight you should be fine.

That’s what I did see as wrong when I was in Mexico. I don’t know what it is, but when Americans go to Mexico, especially young people, they just do everything to show they are stupid, ignorant Americans. They have the gaudy sunglasses, they have an attitude that says I can’t be bothered and there’s a scowl to their faces. Actually scowl isn’t the right word. There’s a superiority vibe to the face that’s tough to describe but easy to pick out.

I talked to a couple of waiters at this bar and they told me the same thing, which made me feel great because I didn’t feel like I was imagining things. I’m not the friendliest guy in the world, but hey, if someone is going to be friendly with me I’m going to be nice back. I talked with the waiters and got a good table, got some good food and got good perspective on their work.

I must say that I do hit some odd bars in my travels. There the bar near where I live that on the weekdays will have the regulars come in and watch The Price Is Right. I thought that would have been tops on my list but the bar I was at in Mexico was serving all sorts of alcohol at 10am while the TVs has the 700 Club on in English. That was actually the second day I was there. On the first day, which drew me into the place initially, was the TVs showing the Spanish version of the Cartoon Network and they were showing Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

I asked them about the violence and they said it’s far overrated. I had heard about a lot of shootings in Tijuana in the past few weeks and waiters told me that stuff happened well away from where the tourists go. They said Americans hear shooting in Mexico and think the whole country is being shot up.
