You knew it had to happen. A story like theirs couldn’t end happily. There were rumors about it a few days ago and today there was confirmation that Sarah Palin’s daughter and her boyfriend had broken up. It makes sense since the two were being forced into a marriage to uphold some outdated notion of family values.

Yes, there have been some in the press that say we should leave them alone. They say this is a lot of pressure for young people to be put under. Well, yes it is but for the past three weeks; on TV, tabloid and regular newspapers and magazines have been plastered with Rhianna and Chris Brown news. We have been subjected to every little detail about their life, about people in their lives, and how violence should and shouldn’t be handled between couples. This couple is only slightly older than the Palin couple, but both are in a sense none of our business and very much our business.

OK, I can understand the shaking of heads because it can’t be both. The thing is, on the basic level about the couples, yes it isn’t our business. I don’t care what Chris Brown’s friends think and I don’t care about what the father’s family thinks about the Palin break up. The gossip mill stuff isn’t relevant to the story, however many pundits are focusing on that issue.

The tragedy of both stories has to do with people exploiting the situation to get their own points across, not thinking or caring about the larger picture and how that will effect society. I’m sorry but I don’t equate love with violence, so I can’t understand how you can love someone so much but beat them up. Furthermore, I can’t understand wanting to stay with the person. If you get beat up, no matter what the reason, you have to go. The situation is too toxic.

In the Palin case, I don’t believe the thought of the kids was ever in the discussion; and when I say kids I mean Palin and her boyfriend. From all the reports, even those given at the time the pregnancy was announced, it seemed way too much like a John Hughes film. Rich girl and poor guy hooks up, they’re in love until the pregnancy then the parents get involved and the conflict begins. This puts pressure on the couple and they have to break up.

Both sides wanted to keep up appearances, and if you’re living a lie you can’t hold that up for long. The Palin situation made matters worse because of the fame issue. All I can think about is what if McCain had become President? I’m looking at all the junk being thrown at Obama right now because of trying to run the country and there are small distractions going on in the news. Think of the coverage if Sarah Palin was Vice President and this break up occurred. My goodness it would be worse coverage than the Rhianna / Brown mess.
