Is this woman a whore? Is she a slut? Does she deserve to be called that?

It always amazes me how people are willing to forego the semblance of a civilized society when anonymity is placed on them. When you have to sign name to statements, people, for the most part, chose their words carefully, making sure to express in confident terms what they are trying to say. If they can hide, all bets are off and the dark venom seeps through their words, tainting their thoughts.

Now the woman is Jenn Sterger, the woman at the center of the Brett Favre voicemail controversy. It seems he admitted a few days ago he did sent unwanted voicemails to her but categorically denies he sent lewd pictures to her. I mention the question of her being a whore and a slut because when I read some of the comments people left on the story, because they could hide behind fake names some decided it was her fault or that she planned some elaborate Machiavellian mechanics to get the player in trouble.

I’m not so concerned about if she did or what he was thinking on the incident. What I am concerned over is how people are willing to overlook the logic of a situation because of some outmoded loyalty to their constructed reality. They would rather believe Brett Favre was tricked into leaving voicemail with the woman rather than he cheated on his wife, at least in leaving suggestive voicemails to her, because they want to believe the constructed image he has a loving husband and devoted father.

If we have learned anything in the past year is that men will stray from a loving and attractive wife. Maybe they become bored with the routine or they miss the thrill of the chase, but some men will find a way of messing up a perfectly good relationship. When a man admits to it, as Favre did in a painful and dragged out process, shouldn’t he be more contrite in his admission. I guess you can be concerned if the woman who received the voicemail encouraged the process, but shouldn’t the man be more forthright in answering questions about that? Again, just from history any man who would cheat on his wife must know from experiences of other men that women are going to keep evidence that is undeniable in its damnation. It might be unwanted attention, but if you, as a man, are sending text messages, voicemails and pictures, the person on the other end will keep them for later. When the ‘relationship’ ends, and it will, it will be a messy affair and you will be caught.

Now, the public might forgive you, they might call the woman’s honor into question, but the fact remains your virtuous image will be ruined. Is it worth it? Most would say no.
