A little over a week before the start of Comicon and the online buzz is getting fierce. The schedule of events came out and the news articles, as expected, walk the fine line of saying how influential Comicon is and what a bunch of geeks we are. Even on the CBS show Big Bang Theory, which was a repeat, ended the show with our crew having a bad time but being reminded Comicon was only a few months away. There was a repeat of some morning talk show which did a makeover of a woman who was at the New York Comicon dressed as a Rebel from Star Wars. Even Divorce Court repeated an episode where the husband was a big Star Trek fan, even speaking Klingon to his wife.

What was grating to me about the Divorce Court show, and many of the Comicon tie ins, is the ‘normal’ people look at the geeks as being weird, yet when the normals try to be ‘with it’ they turn out just like the parents of a child trying to relate and do it badly. I used to try to be with the normals, saying that any little mishap is just nitpicking, but when I saw how normal folks act when one of their shows or hobbies are referenced wrong, I decided not to play the game anymore. On Divorce Court, when the guy said he related to the Klingons, the judge said oh she knows Star Trek and rattled off basic facts any Star Trek baby would know. She then said Live Long and Prosper. A correct statement but she thought it was Klingon and not Vulcan. The Star Trek guy had the look like ‘Well I know your not one of us.’

The San Diego Union has already started the Comicon coverage. They have an online section going over the current convention and a retrospective of the past 40 years. It’s the earliest and most extensive information I’ve ever seen of the convention. The LA Times has a relatively small section, but if they follow last year’s pattern, they will have a blog report and large coverage of the convention.

Unlike other years, I think this year’s convention is hitting the balance. About a third to half of the convention is devoted to comics with the rest being balanced out by movies, TV and a small sliver to gaming. While I can marginally accept a Big Bang Theory panel, there is a show, forgot the name, that is being presented which is nothing more than a regular comedy, save for some kid who is into sci-fi and comics. Whatever hook producers can do to get their show into the convention they will try.
