Entertainment Weekly had the first photographs from the new Star Trek movie and has the two stars of the movie on the cover. Hmm, when I first saw it online, which was exactly 5 minutes before typing this article, the first thing that hit my mind wasn’t the stirring Star Trek music, but the theme to the old Beverly Hills 90210 show. I must say the costumes look like the old costumes, but with a budget. Zachary Quinto actually looks the part of Spock but my goodness, Chris Pine as Kirk? Talk about a pretty boy. I know he’s the reason why the music played in my head.

I took some time to read the article. It looks OK. I’m a Star Trek fan, have to be as a card carrying geek in good standing, but I always worry when non-genre people, like JJ Abrams, come into a project like this wearing their non-genre alliance proudly. I understand the notion of taking a project like Star Trek and trying to broaden its audience, but it was the geeks, the Trekkers, who kept the franchise alive in the bad times. There has to be a sensibility as to what came before and then, and this is the important part, how to make that changes needed from that base to reach a wider audience. It’s not so much adapting the material for a new audience as it is trying to get the public to embrace what fans feel about the material.

Looking at it, I have a sense of oh about the Star Trek relaunch, but, in contrast, looking at the Watchmen movie, which is another holy canon in geekdom, because the director is a fan of the material and sees to have fought to keep things true to the source material, fans are very eager to see the final product. The Star Trek stuff probably will get the geek juices flowing, but from the pictures and the tone of the article I’m not sold on the project.
